How Bruce T Jailbreaks iDevices

Updated 2/14/2013

This video shows the entire evasi0n jailbreak process.

This iPhone 4 had the stock weather app crashing issue, so I decided to restore and jailbreak again while recording the process.  Restoring and running evasi0n again fixed the weather app crashing issue, not that anyone uses it anyway. I experienced no issues while jailbreaking my 3GS, iPad 2 or iPhone 5.

Here's the highly unprofessional video, shot with my iPhone 5.  Enjoy.

That's how Bruce T does a cheesy jailbreak video.

Updated 6/16/2012:

iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak options.

This jailbreak is very simple, and if you have never jailbroken your device before, perhaps this will be the release that convinces you.

Option 1. Absinthe, for ALL iOS devices, including iPad 2, iPhone 4S, iPad 3.  Absinthe does not however, jailbreak Apple TV 3.

Click here for the Absinthe blog and details.......

Click here for a quick and easy video explanation....it really is that simple...Click here and
let Jeff @ iDownloadBlog who you how.

Option 2. RedSn0w.  Just as simple as Absinthe and my personal choice.

Click here to learn more about RedSnow to JB 5.1.1 untethered.

And a companion video.

And there you have it, this is where we are at with iOS 5.1.1 Jailbreaks....

Again, please consider these tips when Jailbreaking:

1.  Though shall ALWAYS backup device in iTunes
2.  Though shall transfer purchases from device to iTunes library.
3.  Though shall ALWAYS backup SHSH and Jailbreak tweaks and apps using PKbackup or other

backup utility found in Cydia.  [You can also use Tiny Umbrella to back up your SHSH blobs.]

If you are at 4.xx and upgrading to 5.xx, I recommend you RESTORE TO 5.XX and start as a new device once you have Jailbroken your device.  This will provide you with a clean install and jailbreak.

If you are at 5.0.1 and going to 5.1.1, you should be fine with an normal update in iTunes then Jailbreak.

I always restore to the latest firmware then start as new, but that's me.

Exciting news, the highly anticipated UNTETHERED iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak solution has been released.

Thanks to @Pod2G and the Chronic Dev Team!!! As always, donate and say thank you to these Dev's, tons of time goes into finding exploits and keeping the Jailbreak community alive.

If you have an A5 device such as an iPhone 4S or iPad 2, this Jailbreak is not for you. **YOU WILL HAVE TO REPAIR iBOOKS after Jailbreaking, details below**

I love this one, if you are already JB'd tethered as I am on 5.0.1  using a previous version of Redsn0w, all you have to do is launch Cydia and install "Corona 5.0.1 Untether" [version 0.1-3], that's it, done. Awesome & simple!!  If you are on stock firmware, read on.  It was flawless!!!!

Also, if you are currently JB'd tethered, you can run Redsn0w 0.9.10.b1 0.9.10.b2 over the top of your current jailbreak, but REMEMBER TO UNCHECK THE "INSTALL CYDIA" OPTION.

If you are using stock 5.0.1 firmware and need a fresh jailbreak, just run Redsn0w 0.9.10b1 0.9.10b2  0.9.10b3 now.

Remember my laws of Jailbreaking, in this order:

1. Transfer purchases & backup your iDevice in iTunes. Do  both of these by right clicking your iDevice name in iTunes and selecting these options.
2. Back up your Cydia apps using PKGBackup or some other reliable utility. I recommend using the Dropbox feature along with PKGBackup.  Get your free DROP BOX ACCOUNT HERE
3. Don't skip rules 1 & 2
4. Now update to the current the firmware.
5. After updating to the latest firmware, iTunes will restore your settings, apps and music.
7. Right click your  iDevice in iTunes and select "Restore from Backup".
8. Launch Cydia, it will configure your file system and exit.  Launch it again and install PKGBackup.
9. Start PKGBackup and link it back to your Drop Box account in settings.  Restore, Reboot, Respring. Done.

**Tip: Using the "sync only checked songs and videos" feature in iTunes will speed up the process of getting your favorite music and videos back onto your iDevice**

Here is a screen shot from my freshly Jailbroken iPad 2.

Thanks to Comex and the Dev community for all the hard work and effort that goes in to keeping our iDevices Jailbroken!!!!!!

The Dev Team has released yet another solid and untethered Jailbreak, Redsn0w 0.9.6RC15 for iOS 4.3.3

I followed my usual routine, and things worked perfectly.

4. Do no update, RESTORE to the latest firmware for a clean install.  This helps avoid the blank Cydia icon and other issues many have after updating to the latest iOS firmware then Jailbreaking.
5. After restoring to the latest firmware, do not restore from backup yet, select "start as new device" or simply power off your device.
7. Right click your  iDevice in iTunes and select "Restore from Backup".
8. Launch Cydia, it will configure your file system and exit.  Launch it again and install PKGBackup.
9. Start PKGBackup and link it back to your Drop Box account in settings.  Restore.

**Tip: Using the "sync only checked songs and videos" feature in iTunes will speed up the process of getting your favorite music and videos back onto your iDevice**

Done.  Follow these steps and you will have a clean, trouble free Jailbreak.

I successfully ran Greenpois0n RC5 on my 3GS over the top of my 4.2.1 tethered Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 jailbreak. No issues what so ever.  I no longer need my laptop or PC to reboot my phone.  Thank you Chronic Dev Team!!!!

On a side note, it does take a while for your iDevice to reboot after the initial jailbreak. No worries.  Once you get to the rotating Apple/Greenpois0n logo, you are good to go.

So if you are are currently on the Redsn0w 0.9.6 jailbreak, go download and run Greenpois0n RC5.

Here is a great site from comex & chpwn, JAILBREAK QA. Go here for questions and answers about jailbreaking your iDevice.

Here is a tutorial video posted on YouTube by Xadget.

Please follow these tips BEFORE you jailbreak:
1. If you are already jailbroken, use PKGbackup or  some other back up app in Cydia to back up your Cydia apps. I prefer PKGbackup [$7.99] because it backs up your settings and preferences.
2. Transfer purchases & backup your iDevice in iTunes.
3. If you are using 4.2.1 onRedsnow0.9.6, rung Greenpois0n and you will be untethered, your will not lose your data or apps.
4. If you are currently Jailbroken on 4.1, upgrade your firmware to 4.2.1 using iTunes.  You will have to start from a fresh jailbreak and restore from backup.
5. If you used PKG backup[or some other app], install it from Cydia after your new jailbreak and use it to restore your Cydai apps.

**IT APPEARS I WILL SOON BE UPDATING THIS PAGE TO THE LATEST JAILBREAK**

According to recent tweets, both the latest Untethered Jailbreaks, Greenpois0n and Redsn0w, are close to being complete.  The long awaited Untethered solution seems to be moments away. A complete tutorial will follow.  STAY TUNED!!!!
All updates are at the end of this article.  PLEASE READ ENTIRE ARTICLE AND UPDATES

iPhone 3GS, my current Firmware is 4.2.1, Jailbroken using Redsn0w 0.9.6b4 0.9.
 0.9.6rc7 0.9.6rc8

If you require an ulocked jailbreak to use your iPhone with another carrier, I suggest you use Redsn0w 0.9.6B6.  Follow the tutorial HERE if you require a carrier unlock.

I will post links for the latest untethered 4.2.1 Jailbreak once it moves from beta testing to final release.  Based on my Twitter feed, this will most likely happen in the next two weeks. I do not recommend using the method below if you have a newer iDevice.  Wait for the final release of Redsn0w 0.9.7 or the soon to be released Jailbreakme3.0.

This jailbreak method is tethered for newer devices [3GS, iPhone 4, & iPad] made after approx 9/2009, untethered for older devices.  Click HERE to learn how to date your iDevice by using the 4th & 5th digit of your serial  number.  Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 gives you a tutorial prior to Jailbreaking.

I recommend changing your default SSH password after Jailbreaking.  Click HERE to find out how to do it.  I also recommend using the SBSettings toggle for SSH, alowing you to turn SSH off when not in use.

Click HERE to see how I did it, or watch THIS YouTube video.

The devs are close to releasing an untethered version of Redsn0w 0.9.7.  Click HERE for more information.  Windows version will be released once the bugs are worked out by the Mac users.

**ALWAYS DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE DOING BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO JAILBREAK YOUR PHONE**

Update 1: 1/3/2011

**According to recent tweets, Redsn0w 0.9.7b5 for Windows is only days away.  I still recommend everyone wait for the final release as this version of Redsn0w will still be a beta program**

I just upgraded my Redsn0w jailbreak from 0.9.6b4 to 0.9.6rc7 for Windows.  If you are already jailbroken using any version of redsn0w 0.9.6, all you have to do is re-jailbreak using redsn0w 0.9.6rc7.  This is still a tethered jailbreak, fixes some bugs from previous versions and allows for "quick" boot option. Click HERE and HERE for more information on this "quick" boot option. If you are re-Jailbreaking from a previous version of 0.9.6, uncheck the "install Cydia" box before you run the upgrade. If you don't, your Cydia apps will still be installed, but won't show up as installed in Cydia.

For information on carrier unlock [unlock phone to use with a carrier sim other than AT&T] using ultrasn0w, click HERE

Update 2: 1/6/2011

Redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 was just released to fix a couple bugs.... Click HERE for more info.  I ran the upgrade, all systems go.  Hopefully the final release of 0.9.7 is going to arrive soon....I'll keep you posted.
